There is some evidences that smoking is harmful for your health and it induces epigenetics effects, but that is interesting in IBD patients if they quit smoking their symptoms get worst.

What does that mean? Smoking reduces inflammation,or how one factor has different effect in our body?

  1. Smoke provides a bunch of toxins, free radicals, and carcinogens-- all likely to be bad for you; and nicotine, which is a drug, and may have good or bad effects depending on where it is. Could that be part of this story? There are of course nicotinic receptors in the nervous system, and 100% of schizophrenics will smoke if they can, as they say it relieves some of their symptoms.

  2. I read somewhere that smoking can work as an immunosuppressor.. And isn't that how IBD is treated? It could be that smoking can lead to the occurrence of IBD but can (in addition) act to suppress the immune system, leading to reduced inflammation.. Just a thought.
